Allium fistulosum
Also called Bunching Onion, Japanese Leek, or Welsh Onion
A hardy perennial allium that’s as useful as it is beautiful. Unlike traditional onions, Welsh Bunching Onions don’t form bulbs—instead, they grow in tidy clumps and are harvested for their flavorful green stalks. Their mild, sweet onion flavor makes them perfect for fresh salads, stir-fries, soups, and anywhere you'd use a green onion.
These onions are perennial in zones 4–9 and may return in zone 3 with winter mulch. In colder climates, they die back in winter and re-emerge in spring with renewed vigor. As the clump matures, you can harvest the outer stalks or divide the patch to spread them throughout your garden.

Growing Instructions:
Plant divisions about 6" apart in compost-rich, well-drained soil. Keep consistently moist but avoid soggy conditions. Over time, each plant will send up new shoots from the base, forming dense, edible clumps. They thrive in full sun and benefit from regular feeding with compost or organic fertilizer.
Low-maintenance, cold-hardy, and delicious—these are a staple in any perennial vegetable garden or edible landscape.
